Dates of project: 24.08.2020-15.11.2020
Urban walks project was initiated by the Street Art Research Institute in 2019. Since then, our main goal has been studying street art in its various manifestations within the urban environment. We regularly organise public tours of St. Petersburg, where we carefully observe how art happens to be interwoven in an urban fabric, how it affects our perception of the city on both micro and macro levels. During the entire project, an interested community has already formed around it and several guiding routes have appeared. Yet we certainly have never meant to leave it as that!
So in the fall of 2020, we launched a large interregional project called the Hunter’s School. The goal of this project is to expand the community of people expressing an active interest in art in open urban spaces and jointly develop tools and platforms for its research. As part of the School, the Institute’s team managed to travel to eleven cities in Russia. Together with local residents, we explored the local street art scene and its various forms: monumental forms, graffiti, elements of environmental design. The preliminary result that we are happy to share is the creation of an archive of photos and route maps on which places of the highest street art concentration are marked. These maps do not pretend to be comprehensive and, we are sure, will be repeatedly updated with new tags, as the number of cities participating in our project will increase. But these maps may well be the starting point of your independent walk-trip! Enjoy!
